Strengthen Learning While Sitting

My Students

I'm a resource teacher working with a diverse group of special needs students ranging in ability levels. My students need support with reading, writing, math and executive function skills. I service students with attention deficit disorder, processing delays and a variety of other learning disabilities.

Optimizing resources to support optimum learning is our goal.

My students are eager learners who have individualized education needs that I want to target when I have the opportunity to work with them. Our time together is quick and valuable. Providing resources in our classroom that are easily available, efficient and accommodating are a necessity and a benefit for these students.

My Project

How to help the students who have trouble sitting still for long periods of time? Give them the opportunity to move a little while they're sitting. An alternative seating choice, such as a wobble chair, is an accommodation for these kinesthetic learners who work better with some physical stimulation within their body. This stimulation benefits the students' thinking as well. Provided the right accommodations, my students have a better chance of performing at their best.

Wobble chairs provide the opportunity to strengthen the body and the brain while sitting.

The chairs, comprised of a stool built into a rounded base, allows for gentle movement back and forth and around. This gentle movement supports posture and muscle tone improvement which can benefit the students' motor control when writing. It also allows a restless student to move in a non-disruptive way, which benefits every student in the class! Last, but definitely not least, this movement results in the heart beating faster. This will increase blood flow, which means more oxygen gets to the brain, improving focus and knowledge retention...ultimately strengthening the students' learning skills.
