My students are a wonderfully diverse group of kids in a close-knit, supportive school community. They all have varying academic, behavioral, and personal needs; some need more challenging learning, some need more scaffolded learning, and some also have special needs that require more intensive interventions. Our school population has grown every year I've taught here and there has been a growing waiting list every year. The staff and faculty are amazing and collaborative, the parents are pro-active and care about all the children, and the children are a sweet caring group of kids.
My Project
My 2nd grade students are at home distance learning this year and need to practice writing and art skills. I cannot give the same attention to detail I would during in-person class sitting beside them, but that doesn't mean I'm giving up on those skills! I have also noticed that some are in need of supplies to work on these skills, which is an equity issue. The primary lined notebooks will help ground the students' writing and improve penmanship, as well as improve their grip. Writing assignments have been difficult for some students, partially because of the lack of grip strength, practice, and Some of my students do not have lined paper (and paper in general) at home. The watercolor pencils and sketchbooks will be used during their art classes and asynchronous visual art assignments to help with hand-eye coordination, grip control, and give an alternate form of expression.
These supplies will help improve fine-motor and visual skills off screen at home during distance learning.
These concrete materials will help hand-eye coordination, as well as strengthen their grip control in preparation for 3rd grade writing skills/ cursive/ art skills.
