My students need school supplies! Since we come from a low-income area, I learned this year that most students cannot afford to buy basic school supplies. We need pencils, notebooks, crayons, and much more.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
All students at my school receive 100% free lunch and breakfast. Our elementary school is very small and rural with about 600 students K-6th. The demographic make-up of our elementary school consists of 80% African-American with around 20% Caucasian.
LEARNERS IN NEED!
In Mrs. H's 3rd grade classroom, we come from all different backgrounds, including African-American, Caucasian, and even Native American. Oh, don't forget our awesome inclusion students! We have 9 sweet but talkative girls in our class, and the rest are energetic and boisterous boys. We all come from different home lives. Some are good; however, most are sad. We have been through a lot in our short 8 or 9 years, but we are motivated and excited to learn.
In our class, we learn phonics, writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and social studies. We have to pass an extremely important test at the end of the year called the MAP test. We are super nervous, and we need all of the help we can get. Mrs. H is a brand new teacher that does not have all the materials that the older, experienced teachers have. Please help her, so she can help us!
My Project
Being a first year teacher, I didn't realize how quickly my students would use up ALL of their school supplies, and that there were a lot of students in my classroom that could NOT afford the school supplies in the first place. About three weeks ago, I went to pass out new notebooks to my class, and I quickly realized that about 8 of my students never turned in ANY notebooks at all. I had purchased notebooks at the beginning of the year to have a stash for students that didn't have supplies, but those are gone too! Also, in the last month, we have used up ALL of our pencils, and we HAVE to have pencils.
We are straight outta pencils, notebooks, paper, erasers, and much, much more!
Plus, we have a whole month of school left, which includes state testing. Yes, the math and writing state tests are on the computer, but the students are allowed to use pencils and scratch paper during both of these. BUT... We don't have any pencils left to use! What will we do?
This project is full of different supplies that would be useful in my classroom. There's an X-Acto pencil sharpener, which is not cheap, but my pencil sharpener from the beginning of the year is broken. A classroom set of notebooks, some colorful copy paper, cardstock, index cards, pens, crayons, markers, and highlighters to be used to make writing a little more fun. Some laminator pouches and dry erase pouches, so students don't have to just use pencils or pens and paper for the rest of the year. They can use Expo markers instead! My class would REALLY appreciate all the new supplies to help us finish out the school year Trojan strong.
