Storytelling Through Photojournalism

Help me give my students a new camera to give more students an opportunity to practice their photojournalism skills and tell their story in our expanding journalism program.

My Students

My students are creative, intelligent, community-oriented kids. They are working hard to learn more about journalism and how to be thoughtful, respectful, and truthful reporters. Our journalism program is expanding to reach more students and we need an extra camera to allow them to practice their skills as we work to build unity in our school.

The pandemic separated and isolated our students and now we are working to re-build that sense of community by reporting on events and people in our school to help everyone reconnect.

We live in a visual age, and the photos we take help us to share and remember the people and places that are important to our school community.

My Project

My students have been affected by the pandemic in a variety of ways. Some are feeling lonely from the separation, some were affected by severe disease, and others by a parents lost job and economic instability. In our journalism class, we are trying to help all students connect with each other by showcasing students and their experiences and also helping to memorialize and remember this unique experience.

If we can share our stories through pictures and words, we can find ways to heal from the mental and emotional trauma that this pandemic has caused and realize that we all have been affected by these challenges and we can learn and heal together.
