Storytelling Matters: Bridging Books and Film

Help me give my students a reason to get off their cell phones and into books! I teach English and Filmmaking, and from Pixar to James Bond, these selections bridge the gap between literature and pop culture.

My Project

My students are addicted--literally addicted--to their cell phones. The infinite scroll from one short, empty video to another isn't doing anything to challenge their minds.

The complex brain mapping that young people need to expand their horizons (and, let's be honest, abilities) won't occur unless we entice them to once again pick up books.

Social media provides them with the quick hits of dopamine they crave but provides very little of real value. These books were selected with the specific goal of using their interest in pop culture to lead them into a deeper dive of articulation and thought.

A classroom library ought to be a rabbit-hole that reflects the current interests of modern students but offers more depth than they know to look for on their own. If the books look fun, then the kids will jump in. That's why the titles here lean so heavily on film, music, and inclusive comics.
