Storytelling Drives Compassion

Help me give my students a selection of diverse, high-interest books that will help them take ownership of their reading and the messages they derive from it.

My Students

I remember reading Elie Wiesel's Night as a student many moons ago, and my immediate reaction was simple: How could such an atrocity occur? How could the world keep silent during a time of unspeakable hate? My 9th-grade students come to me with the same questions, feeling as though these dark moments in history are isolated events and are even abstract or fictional. I applaud my 9th graders for their mature insights on humanity and believe that sharing additional stories of injustice with them will enrich their understanding of mankind's responsibility to mankind.

What I love about teaching 9th grade is their observance of and receptiveness to hearing another's story.

If we wait too long to have these important conversations with our youngest high school students, we may miss this golden opportunity.

My Project

The books requested will be used to facilitate book clubs in my College Prep 9th Grade Foundations of Literacy class. Students will work in collaborative groups to sample and then select one of these novels to read alongside Elie Wiesel's Night. Since each of these novels explore different ways in which injustices have historically occurred, or how they may/can occur, students will be asked to synthesize what stories of injustice can teach readers about one of the following thematic concepts: community, hope, and dehumanization.

Each day, we will use Night as a mentor text to discover how these themes emerge; each day, students will also work in their groups to complete reading contracts on their selected book, engaging choice activities, and synthesis activities that connect their selected novel to Night.

At the end of the unit, students will write a collaborative essay using textual evidence from both texts on what individuals can learn from reading various stories of injustice.
