Help me give my students resources to learn about displaced artists to increase their understanding, compassion, and enact positive changes in the world.
What do Ai Weiwei, Pablo Picasso, Yayoi Kusama, and Jean-Michel Basquiat have in common? They are all creative critically acclaimed artists. They also share the experience of being displaced from their homes. Many of my students can make personal connections to the stories of these people through personal experiences or those of their family or friends. As an art teacher, I have the privilege of helping my students’ process complex topics through creative expression while building empathy and compassion. Students will brainstorm ideas about how they can help people who are displaced taking inspiration from people they know or famous artists.
Students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person by studying the stories of artists who experienced displacement and learn about displaced people worldwide to personalize the statistics.
Students will explore individual stories in order to deepen their understanding of displaced people’s experiences and create meaningful artworks that evoke emotion. Reading narratives and analyzing artworks will enable students to think about alleviating suffering in others by putting faces to the statistics. Providing students opportunities to discuss difficult topics in my classroom requires us to work in a well-established safe, respectful, and honest environment. This helps students process, reflect, and develop an understanding of how to enact change. Students will complete an artwork using specific artists as their inspiration and write their own artist statement reflections on how they can further help people with similar stories to those that they learned about to extend the lesson beyond the classroom.
I will measure success in my students’ understanding of compassion by their compassion as demonstrated in their final artworks and their written reflections. Students' performance is expected to value and embrace diverse cultures, unique perspectives, and demonstrate how they can show empathy toward others in similar situations.
