My Students
Math, a term that would send shivers down the back of anyone who had a hard time learning the concepts presented in a math class. If you were like me, my math classes always consisted of watching the teacher model a problem and then having to do 30-50 independent practice problems. How boring!!
I teach a group of 29 lively kindergartners who will only focus on a lesson for 10 to 15 minutes, let alone for a 70 minutes math block. The kids want variety! I mean, can we blame them? In a high-tech world where they can flip through channels or surf the Internet to find something that will catch and hold their attention, teachers have to present material in a variety of ways to keep their attention focused and the students engaged.
My Project
Breaking up a math lesson in chunks of activities that teach the objective is an excellent way of keeping the lesson fresh and exciting for my kids. I am asking for picture books and unifix cubes that will help to introduce each Common Core State Standard in math. I will then create math activities that are similar to the story we read, bridging the lesson between literature and math.
By combining reading and math I will be able to ignite an excitement for learning fundamental math concepts, so my students will be successful mathematicians as they progress through the grades.
