My students love books. They love to be read to whether it is me reading, another teacher, a volunteer or reading buddies. They represent the diverse community of Southwest Yonkers and bring their passion for learning to class daily. They enjoy learning about literacy through interacting with their favorite books. They draw pictures and create stories about their favorite characters, recreate their own versions of the story and integrate themselves and their families into their favorite story’s lines. They are my inspiration!
My students love books. They are active, energetic, little forces of nature. When its reading time, they become mesmerized by the words. It doesn’t matter if the stories are new or old favorite, they get into it and beg to hear their favorite stories over and over. They express excitement and empathy with their favorite characters which they then draw and write about during literacy time.
We are requesting story telling kits with puppets and books.
These materials will support student’s literacy development and writing skills, as they manipulate the characters and setting to bring the stories to life in a way that encourages the creation of their own stories.
