Story Retelling for All-Abilities

Help me give my students new story telling cloth kits with books! Includes classic read alouds such as The Kissing Hand, Pete the Cat, and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly!

My Students

The school in which I work with serves a low-income population, in which more than half of the students are from low-income households. The school only serves Kindergarten through 2nd grade, but the amount of trauma that a lot of the students has already endured appears in the form of disruptive, attention-seeking behaviors, and struggle to self-regulate.

I work with students in special education and general education.

General education students access this environment to assist them in getting ready to learn and regulate their emotions. Most days I teach approximately eight special education classes; all having diverse disabilities that include ADHD, Autism, a learning disability, intellectually disabled, and emotional disturbance. For most of my students, literacy skills and practice can be anxiety provoking. Unexpected behaviors or focus conditions could resist the students' learning.

My Project

Last year I was able to get a project funded by generous donors and community members. This project included a few cloth story telling kits and their books. These cloth kits have been a big hit for students of different ability levels. Working with several students that are very developmentally young or still working on early literacy skills, simply sparking a love of reading and the ability to retell a story is key.

I have students on at K-2nd grade levels and varying ability levels that love to get these cloth retelling kits.

I am reaching out to the community to see if I can gain more of these cloth kits and their well-loved, read-aloud books to go with them. The individual story retelling boards are felt boards that allow the cloth pieces to stick to them to prevent dropping or misplacing them.

This would be a great, hands-on technique for the students early literacy needs.
