My Students

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to school and speak a language that is different than what is spoken in your home? These students are faced with that challenge everyday.

This group is made up up 6-7 5th Grade English Learning Students facing the challenge of attending school and learning a new language at the same time.

In most cases the only English practice they get is at school and in this afterschool program. To get this extra practice students are staying afterschool to participate in Stories without Borders. Stories without Borders is part of the a new program where English Language Learners (ELL) make digital stories and send them to other ELLs in a rural school in Uganda and Western China.

My Project

Stories without Borders helps increase students' literacy skills in a non-traditional format. Students brainstorm ideas that they want children in other countries to know about them. They then make a story arc and plan the videos, record the video footage, edit it, and send it to the other schools. Then the conversation begins. Students at the various schools, watch the video and host a discussion about the video. They then post questions and comments they have on the website. An electronic discussion then ensues about their lives in each of the locations. This then sparks an idea for a new video and the process repeats over and over again. Students are practicing reading, writing, listening, and speaking without even knowing it!

Donations to this project will help us purchase the equipment that these kids need to participate in this literacy opportunity.

This is a special opportunity that gives these students a chance to practice their English while learning about other cultures, as well as examining parts of their own. This is a great project that allows students to practice their English in a non-traditional setting outside of the drill and practice of the school day!
