This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The books in this project will help enrich my classroom library! I have cultivated a list based on the interests and needs of my students. My students love seeing characters who represent their own diverse identities. Almost all of my students are students of color, and many are English Language Learners. These books will allow my students to see themselves portrayed in books and help build a safe and diverse community.
I want books that represent the diversity of my students while still attracting my resistant readers with graphic novels.
Graphic novels will help me engage my most reluctant readers to read and stay engaged in a book. They provide low-pressure reading that will help my students develop their skills as readers and encourage them to pick up more books. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I want to create.
Lastly, since Covid, I have noticed an increased need for social-emotional learning, so I'm adding a few books that address dealing with anxiety. I have given away several similar books to past students who asked for them, so I want to add a few new books to circulate in my classroom library.
