Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are funny, exuberant, high-energy, second graders. Most are from low-income, immigrant families. Despite challenging socio-economic circumstances, my students are eager to grow and learn.
Part of my challenge as a teacher is to ensure that my curriculum is culturally relevant, accessible and reflective of my students' lived experience.
My students are hungry for high-quality stories that deepen their understanding of the world and their role in it. Their joyful enthusiasm for reading, listening to, and discussing meaningful and beautiful books is inspiring.
My Project
I am requesting picture books that will motivate my students to reflect on who they are and to see themselves as agents of positive change in the world.
The texts that I have selected are beautiful and thoughtful picture books that feature characters who look and live like my students.
They deal with topics ranging from family connections across generations to immigration to cultural pride. In Turning Pages, Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, relates how her love of reading helped her connect to different parts of her identity, overcome personal challenges, and work toward her dreams. Crown, an Ode to the Fresh Cut, by Derrick Barnes celebrates the pride brown boys feel when they see their new haircuts. The Proudest Blue, a Story of Hijab and Family by Ibtihaj Muhammad by tells the story of the joy and concern a little girl feels when her older sister wears a hijab to school for the first time. These are just a few examples of the wonderful books that I have chosen to inspire my students.
I have also included picture books, which feature characters of color, that teach self-regulation and empathy in a kid-friendly and accessible way.
