My Students

My students live in a poor rural community, where the average household income is $28,000. Though they are inquisitive and kind, they describe themselves as teens who "don't like reading much, Ma'am." They are boys and girls, white and brown, young people who can read but who do not choose. Because they are so reluctant to read and because there are not appropriate reading materials for them, they are behind in literacy standards and showing little to no reading growth.

My Project

Your gift will help a returning teacher hook reluctant readers so they can become lifelong readers. I start in 10 days, but yesterday the substitute covering my classes sent me this warning: "These teenagers can read but they hate it!"

Your contribution will help me offer high-interest, current fiction for reluctant readers--books they will enjoy reading that will also help them grow!

Most of all, many will meet and fall in love with a book for the first time in their lives. We need a variety of small sets of interesting books that students can read and discuss in class book clubs. Books like READY, PLAYER ONE; YOU DON'T KNOW ME; THE KITE RUNNER, MY LIFE IN DOG YEARS, and LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE.
