Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, high-achieving, book-loving teenagers. I teach in an inner city specialty high school. They come from a variety of backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. My students travel from all over the city with various needs. They are high achievers and have extremely high expectations for themselves. They are competitive and driven. Many of my students have jobs and schedules full of activities, but they are still determined. Our school requires a very rigorous course load as well as community service. When I think of any of my students, each one will have a special interest, a passion or talent that they will happily share.
My Project
I am requesting the book "Hunger of Memory" by Richard Rodriguez. This is a story my students need to hear. Rodriguez is an Mexican American writer who started his education with only 50 words of English. He has gone on to be one of our most prolific writers today. This book is important in showing my students the importance of language, of education and of perseverance. I plan to use the text in my IB Language and Literature course in the area of Intertextuality- Writers and Context. I plan to pair this books with poems and nonfiction selections from diverse writers. One of our learning outcomes is to experience a wide range of texts. This is an area we are in need of as modern texts are something we are in need of greatly.
The writing from students that this text will inspire, will not only center on language but on storytelling and the value of all of our stories.
I have taught other works by this author and many students felt inspired no matter their background.
