Stories of Sacrifice and Hope from World War II

My Students

World War II needs to be understood from many different points of view. The students will be reading Number the Stars, which gives an overview of the struggle to hide Jewish citizens from the German soldiers. The books that I have listed will help expand their knowledge.

I teach at two different schools.

Our community in South Carolina is considered to be high poverty. As the reading/writing coach responsible for these two schools, I see evidence of the problems my students have. As I model lessons in classrooms, I use strategies that have been found to be successful with children of poverty. We are fortunate to have a university near us that helps with research in this area. This project is focused on my fifth graders at both schools, which involves 21 classrooms. One of my schools is a fifth/sixth intermediate and the other is kindergarten-sixth grade.

My Project

These books will help me to model reading for different points of view. The students will also have to work in cooperative groups. The ordering of only a few books of each title will require each group to the experts of their material. The new Common Core Standards require more reading of nonfiction text. These titles will enable me to add rigor to the lesson by challenging the students to connect the points of view from the different scenarios. Students need to learn different strategies for reading nonfiction. Using the various picture books will help them to practice these strategies with material within their ability level. I will use another picture book to model the strategies before students begin to work in their own groups.

This project has several goals.

Students will model the protocols for working in small groups. They will acquire information that they will teach to the class. This will require a good understanding of the topic, taking notes, deciding responsibilities of group members, and connecting the material from the other presentations. These are all important skills for students to have as they move to middle school.
