My Students
I teach urban elementary students in a K-8 school. They come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a diverse community of learners at my school. Many of my students are English Learners (ELs) and speak the following languages at home: Vietnamese, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Arabic, and Cape Verde Creole. All of my students are on Individualized Education Plans (IEPS) and have disabilities including communication disorders and specific learning disabilities. In their IEP, they need services like speech and language therapy.
My Project
Every week, I use different seasonal books to target my student's IEP goals. My students love listening to stories and using them to practice their skills! Having a bigger variety of books to choose from will give my students more learning opportunities throughout the year.
In speech-language therapy, books can be the best way for so many students to work towards their IEP goals. Students with articulation disorders can practice saying the words with their target sounds. Students with language disabilities can practice answering questions and retelling stories. Students with multiple, severe disabilities can learn vocabulary and increase their experiential learning by interacting with objects from stories.
