Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The magic of a well told story is priceless! Many cultures around the world have a rich storytelling tradition that teaches children from generation to generation. In our busy, fast paced lives we have lost this art. These book sets will bring the magic of learning through stories to first grade.
My students come from loving homes where parents work hard to provide for their families.
They live in a relatively impoverished neighborhood in an urban setting. The children are bright, curious and eager to learn. The school they attend provides only very basic materials and does not have any money for teachers to purchase any materials. We are a large urban school district that is facing drastic funding cuts next year. There will be even less opportunity to fund classroom projects next year. Donors Choose is our only opportunity to enrich the learning in our classroom.
My Project
Imagine students curled up on the warm, woolly rug in the sunshine listening to a well told story with lovely music filling the background. Rabbit Ears stories are incredible! I bought one book and cd set when my daughter was young and we were dazzled. The stories are read by celebrities such as Meryl Streep and Whoopie Goldberg. The music is by Lyle Mays or Herbie Hancock. All this adds up to the most incredible storytelling with background music that enhances the stories. These are very traditional, pedagogical tales told in the most lively, rich format. The Read, Listen & Learn series tell stories about animals that teach the children about the quality of the animals in a storytelling format. The writing is rich in descriptive language and the pictures in the books are beautifully illustrated. The students will learn about animal lives, metamorphosis and life cycles through engaging, well written stories.
A very important aspect of literacy is fluency.
When children listen to stories and follow along with a book it helps them to understand what fluent reading sounds like. The students can learn the stories and read along with their favorite stories. I love beautiful language and rich storytelling. My father would tell me stories as I child and developed a deep love of language, poetry and stories. I would love to share this experience with my students through these books and Cd's.
