Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As any teacher knows, transitioning students from one activity to the next can be chaotic. Now just imagine students who speak limited English, and the chaos is only magnified.

My students, who are some of the cutest, most curious 1st and 2nd graders on the planet, are working hard to improve their limited English skills while also accessing all the important grade-level content they need to master in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.

My students and their families hail from all over the world, from El Salvador, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras to Nepal, Iraq, and Eritrea. While they are all dedicated to doing their best, the mix of languages and cultures can sometimes create a bit of craziness in our room.

My Project

That craziness is exactly why my students need your help. Every time we transition from one activity or subject to another, there are kids darting around the room to their backpacks, their cubbies, or the pencil sharpener. Not only does this create a LOT of noise, but it takes away valuable time from learning. This is why I have requested these handy little "At-Your-Seat Storage Sacks." These pockets, which slip over each students' chair, provides them with their own little space to keep materials, books, and other supplies, eliminating almost all of the noise and movement that comes from a simple transition.

Not only will this aid student organization and eliminate some of the time wasted throughout the day, but it provides my students with a feeling of having something they can call their own.

All of my students come from poverty, and many have few resources or toys at home. Most share their rooms and their homes with a large amount of people. Providing my students with these chair pockets not only helps facilitate learning, but helps my students feel empowered and independent.
