Stopping Hunger in Elementary School: Snacks for Students! (Title 1)
Help me give my students variety of snacks and drinks, to stop hunger from happening during and after the school day. These will be used for school and home use.
I am a third-grade teacher. I have a wonderful group of students! They are constantly impressing me with their hard-working attitudes, amazing work ethics, and overall positive outlooks on life. I am so proud to be their teacher. They deserve the best education possible.
I teach at a rural, Title I school serving approximately three hundred students.
Every child receives free breakfast and lunch. We are located near a large military base and, as a result, serve children of active duty and retired military. Our school serves students from many socioeconomic backgrounds including homeless students, who at times may live with family, friends, or other relatives.
Our students are bright and eager to learn new things. They are hard workers and strive to make their world a better place.
My Project
This is my sixth year teaching in this North Carolina military town. Since moving here, I have changed the grade I have taught. Although the grade has changed, certain things haven't changed, such as my desire to help and support my students. Both schools I have taught in have been Title I schools, located in high poverty areas. I enjoy helping my students in any way I can, which includes helping to provide supplies and food as needed. This project is inspired by my students who come in late and miss breakfast.
When this happens, it might be hours before they have a chance to eat at lunch.
As they anxiously await for lunch, the student's attention isn't completely focused on the work and tasks given to them.
Likewise, when I started offering to tutor after school to a few students, they requested after-school snacks. I noticed that providing snacks for the students not only helped them stay on track for the tutoring session, but they were more likely to want to stay after school for tutoring, and looked forward to it! My goal is to have healthy, nutritional snacks available for students this year as well. My goal is to also start sending some food home with students as needed, to help in any way I can. I am asking for snacks and drinks for my students, both during and after school hours. The students are hungry to learn, and would benefit from the nutritional snacks to keep them full, and focused on their school work. Family engagement is also at play here, because when students are able to focus more on academics, they are more focused and able to learn at school. I want this to be one less worry for my student's families. Thank you!
