The second graders that enter my classroom every day have various struggles. They live in urban neighborhoods, and many speak a second language at home. They face many challenges academically, economically, and in their community.
Despite these challenges, my students love to read and write.
They work hard to improve these skills every day. Unfortunately, they don't always have the needed supplies to practice essential skills at home.
Several students borrow classroom books each night to practice and improve their reading fluency at home. Without books and articles from school, many students would not read at home at all.
My Project
Each year as my students and I wind down our school year, we prepare for the summer ahead. When students leave my classroom for the last time as second graders, they are sent with book lists and summer reading requirements.
Unfortunately, many students do not have essential supplies at home to fulfill those summer assignments.
During the school year many borrow books from the classroom to read. In the summer they do not have that same access to books. There are some students that are fortunate to take trips to the library, but many more do not. This project will allow me to send my students off with three books of their very own to read. Books of different genres and appropriate reading levels are essential for students' reading success.
According to the U.S.Department of Education, many studies show that students who do not read over the summer show a decline in reading skills. Putting books in the hands of each of my students will help stop that summer slide. With the folders, paper, and markers my students will also be able to complete the written requirements of summer reading. Last school year I sent my students home with supplies to utilize during the summer, and there was more skill retention than in previous years.
With the funding of this project my students will enter third grade with less learning loss. They will be ready to learn!
