Stop the Stigma: Let's Talk About Mental Health and Addiction

My Project

Students in our 8th grade AVID group have been working to learn about mental health and addiction. They have completed a program during which they have learned the myths and facts about who is affected by mental health and addiction, as well as how to help someone they know who might be struggling. Students have learned compassion towards those suffering and will apply that to their final project.

After completing this comprehensive program, students were asked to brainstorm ways they can spread the word to their peers and help stop the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction.

The plan the students came up with included setting up a booth at lunch where they would be able to explain the facts and hand out crucial contact information for anyone who needs it, and just start the conversation in our middle school about mental health and addiction. Students will learn compassion by leading and participating in these difficult conversations.

Students have begun creating a backdrop for the other students to take pictures with to take with them, along with the information packets, in the hopes that they will remember this interaction in the future if they need support. For this, we need instant film so that the students can take the pictures and hand them to the other students to take with them. We have the cameras, now we just need the film to spread the word, stop the stigma and learn from each others' experiences!
