My students are a bright and brilliant group of young people that are in the process of learning to truly grow through their education and community. My group of students this year are such a unique group of individuals that have been celebrating each others' differences. I am extremely proud of the community that they are building and have seen them grow tremendously.
The school is located in a lower income area in the silicon valley.
Most of the students at the school receive free and reduced lunch. It is a Title I school in East San Jose, California with a high population of English Learners. Although we are lacking many resources, the fighting spirit found within the teachers and students push us further towards our goals.
My Project
The resources in this project will greatly build the students' educations in science, math, and even physical education. With the Next Generation Science Standards having been adopted by state, the provided curriculum by the district no longer meets the standards. While waiting for the district to adopt a new curriculum I have been trying to teach my students through lessons that I have created on my own through research and adding in STEM projects during every opportune time I can find.
5th grade is the first year that the students are tested in science, and I want to make sure my students feel successful while preparing and taking the state test.
The use of the stop watches will greatly help the students to prepare for all aspects of science while doing hands are learning and hands on timing. They will also help the students in math by teaching them to self regulate while working on their fluency facts during independent choice working time. Lastly, the stop watches will be used to time each student while building running stamina. 5th grade is when the students do nationwide state testing, which includes a timed mile.
We are also in need of the assistance with the technology "T" in STEM. The earbuds will be used with the technology that we were finally able to get in the classroom, and the earbud holders are so that each student can take care of their earbuds, which teaches them responsibility. The rest of the materials will be used for recording their experiments and keep track of their progress. Thank you so much for considering this project.
