Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is filled with diverse students from all types of backgrounds: English Learners, low-income, special needs, GATE, and AP/IB candidate students. Despite all the learning styles that come into my class, the students all share one thing in common: they enjoy learning things about the natural world and how it affects them on a personally and their community.
Science is most enjoyable when it is hands-on and tangible, where students get to see real objects and how it is applicable to current events.
My students are most engaged when we apply the knowledge of what we study into inquiry research projects and lab activities. This fosters their curiosity and activate their critical and analytical thinking skills necessary for all twenty-first century learners.
My Project
Sick building syndrome (SBS) can lead to mental fatigue, fogginess, and discomfort. My classroom is located in a science building that enclosed multiple storage rooms and offices as well as seven other science classes. None of our classrooms have windows and thus very little air flow. In our science classes, we use chemicals and Bunsen burners that release fumes. Furthermore, our classrooms are decades old and have accumulated lots of volatile organic chemicals, odors, chemicals from the walls and cleaning chemicals, and lots of dust. All of these compounded lead to SBS.
We are requesting an air purifier for clean and fresh air so they can learn!
My students deserve to learn in a healthy environment. I spend a lot of time in my classroom (outside of contract hours as I am constantly lesson planning, grading, setting up and breaking down labs and meetings for clubs. After spending hours in my room, I can sense fatigue and allergic reaction such as sneezing and itchy eyes. I've seen the same signs in my students - frequently blowing noses, or worse, snorting up mucus, coughing, and frequent colds and absences. These things all get in the way of focused learning.
A HEPA filter will help me keep the room cleaner, and therefore keep myself and my students healthier. Being able to focus in my classroom and students' overall well being is key in being successful academically (and probably physically!). For the few hours a day students are in my room, they should have the best quality of air so they can be healthy, and at their best to learn.
