Imagine a child that was too afraid to use their voice. Readers of all ages love sharing their writing and stories through puppets. Puppets foster good performances and leadership.
I believe putting on puppet shows will help our students to become better storytellers and increase language skills.
My students have many daily struggles in their lives. Those struggles include homelessness, living with one parent, parents with no job, and illiterate parents. Our elementary school is a cheery spot located in a high crime, poverty stricken area with limited resources in Dallas Southern Sector. 99% of our students receive free lunch and come from non-English, Spanish speaking households. Data shows that the majority of our parents have a third grade education and lack the education to model or require reading at home. Resources are limited and I am scrambling to give self-confidence to reluctant speakers and readers. I am fighting against the clock.
My students need a puppet theater, puppets, flannel board, flannel puppets, and storytelling books. I believe having puppet shows will not only motivate the older students but also motivate and entertain all Prek-5th grade students here. Puppetry naturally opens the door to language development. There is no other entertainment media that encourages children to exercise their expressive abilities often without them even knowing it. What a wonderful springboard for rich language opportunities back in the classroom! Writing is also important and I think students would develop their writing skills enjoy putting on their own plays. It is important that our students get the proper tools to create effective plays such as: a puppet theater, puppets, and plays, felt characters and a felt board. We will put on puppet shows in our library and perform for not only the younger students but parents and community as well. Some other advantages of puppetry is that it provides opportunity for team work and it provides emotional release.
Putting on puppet shows will help our performers to create stories in creative ways.
Who doesn't like to hear a good play? Will you please help? I really believe that the puppets will expand their vocabulary and help build their literature skills. Secondly, retelling plays in front of their class will build self-confidence. Lastly, by bringing puppets into lives of our students, I believe I can help create a strong sense of community among our students. Please give to our project.
