Our school is located in a rural high poverty area of the county. The students come from diverse backgrounds and many have experienced more in their short lives than any human being (young or old) should have to encounter.
Many of my students have challenging circumstances but they do not let that stop them in trying to reach their goals each and every day.
Building a sense of community and normalcy by providing students with an idea of a future beyond their current living situation is our main priority. We want to open students eyes to the big world around them and show them how they can be successful in it.
My Project
Play based learning is genuinely and positively impactful on student learning and developing. Students learn through the process of play. Indoor and outdoor games allow students to work together to make decisions based on creative thinking, communication, and collaboration.
"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning, but for children lay is serious learning, Play is really the work of childhood" - Fred Rogers.
For outdoor recess, I am requesting a volleyball, basketballs, soccer balls, flag football, and ribbon dancers. For indoor play, I am requesting checkers, jenga, connect 4, and 2 merge cubes. All of the games will not only be used for free play time but also for adding games to our curriculum to encourage active engagement. The merge cubes are not only fun but are also used with STEM apps and games encouraging learning through play and exploration in augmented reality.
