Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students that return to this magnet high school for their 10th grade year are truly committed to themselves, their parents and the school! They are eager to learn and are passionate about their future careers in the particular magnet they selected to be actively engaged in.
As the sole 10th grade English teacher, my ultimate desire is to foster and strengthen each students' classroom experience that leads to independent student practice and achievement.
All too often, students tell me that they cannot afford basic school supplies. I understand as 93.3% of the student body qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. I want to equip them with the essential classroom supplies to be successful!
My Project
For Home Learning, students are required to devout time to studies in Khan Academy (an online program preparing students for SAT/ACT). As students achieve progress in Khan Academy, students will earn "dollars," deposit them into a fictitious bank account, complete a catalog order form (calculating shipping, handling and taxes), then deduct the "purchase amount" from their "bank account" and in return basic school supply items such as: packs of college rule paper, graphic composition books, glue sticks, markers, and other items this educator has already procured through other grants and her own funds. After completing the order form, students must write out a "bank check" completely in cursive (a lost art form)!
Ninety three percent of the students qualify for the Title I "Free/Reduced Lunch Program" and are well in need of basic school supplies!
Financial Literacy, real life experience and reading literacy all rolled into one!
