My Students
I teach at an urban middle school full of culturally diverse students. Every student in our district receives free breakfast and lunch due to the high poverty in our community. Many of our students come from hard working families. They just need some help.
In our school, we have students who hear the school bell ring in the afternoon and begin to worry about where their next meal will come from. Many of our students live with food insecurity. That shouldn't happen, and this is a way to support these students.
My Project
We all know that kids cannot learn without their basic needs met, and having the Lewiston Middle School food pantry as a resource for that is crucial to our student's success. Things like peanut butter, tuna, and soup might seem like small things, but they can make a bigger impact to a child in need. Our students are able to come into the pantry and take the items home that they are without. In addition, we are also able to pack bags for students in need to take home directly from school should the need arise.
Keeping the pantry well stocked has been a struggle for us as the need is greater than we have resources for. Having your donations provide more of the "high need" items was a great way for us to restock and replenish for the needs of our students.
