Stimulating the Senses!

Help me give my students a fun, sensory, learning experience! Sand play is very calming for my students and is educational at the same time.

My Students

I recently took over a classroom for preschool students who have various special needs. We are located in a public school in the city of Newport. My students are three and four years old. As with all preschoolers, my students benefit from hands-on experiences and learning through music and play opportunities. One of my sessions is designed for students who have autism so we need to keep everything structured and organized.

Because this is an add-on classroom ,I have lots of hand-me-downs from other teachers/classrooms.

I would love to set up a rich, welcoming environment for my students and need a few larger items in order to do that.

My Project

We have a sensory area that my students with autism use daily. It provides them the opportunity to learn to self-regulate their emotions and calm themselves when they are stressed. Typical sand can be very messy and when wet it sticks to the students hands. Not the best idea for students who have sensory needs!

Sand play is low-stress while providing the students with the opportunity for much needed sensory input!

Replacing our typical sand with kinetic sand will provide them with more play opportunities and will make it easier for the students to manipulate the sand. Safe, fun and education makes this a winning choice!
