My students need a stereomicroscope, which can look at larger items, like water samples and rocks, unlike typical microscopes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school is located in a very small, rural, farming community. We have a very high free and reduced price lunch rate population, alongside a high migrant student population, and English Language Learners. This creates many inequities in the learning process. Students need extra support in most courses, due to these many factors.
Our goal as educators in this unique community is to try and bridge the gap caused by socioeconomic status, migrant living, and being English language learners.
Students who live a migrant lifestyle will often have numerous gaps in their learning due to changes in schools, standards, and expectations from place to place. Many of our students also spend time traveling from family to family and have extended periods of time spent outside of the U.S. where there is no public education. Our school is in major need of support for these students of special needs.
My Project
My students need a stereomicroscope so they can investigate living microorganisms. By utlizing a stereomicroscope versus a typical microscope, students will be able to look at detailed images of water-living organisms, rocks, and other material that would not fit under a regular compound microscope.
Students will be taking water samples from areas around our rural community and will be testing them for particulates and examining any aquatic organisms living in the water.
This stereoscope will give access to a whole new world to disenfranchised students from a rural community where resources are weak in most homes. Anytime students can investigate the world around them and understand the ecology of the region they are living in, they will flourish.
