Steps to a New Garden

My project needs 6 stepping stone molds and 3 boxes of stone cement to create beautiful, sparkling mosaic stepping stones for our school garden.

I teach art and gardening at a title-1 charter elementary school in Washington, D.C. I have started schoolyard gardens at other charter schools in the city with great success among the students and community. Many of the students at my school are now involved with the creation of a schoolyard garden next to our building.

Every time we have a garden activity (growing new plants, digging for worms, etc) they are completely engaged and excited. However, I am running out of possible projects for the students now that it is wintertime (no digging in the hard ground) and we don't have any school funding. I am working with the community and friends to amass resources for the spring in order for us to break ground, amend the soil and add plenty of plants. In the meantime, I would like to work on a pathway with the students and decorate it with mosaic stepping stones.

In order to make the mosaic stepping stones, I need the stone cement and molds for the stones. I already have mosaic glass and grout in my art room. This project will be a permanent addition that my students can contribute to the school, as well as a beautiful and useful way to keep everyone from stepping on the plants!

By supporting this project, you will be helping our school literally make the steps necessary for our garden. The stepping stone project will promote ownership and collaboration amongst our students and a dedication to the future of a schoolyard garden.
