Steps For Music!

My students need 5 sets of step bells to give them a way to visualize and play the concepts of high and low in music.

My Students

When you climb steps, does your mind think "do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti,do"? I have seven steps leading down into the music room, one for each pitch of the major scale. I would love to have step bells, so that in addition to singing the steps, my students could "play" the steps, too!

I teach music to approximately 450 students in grades K-5.

Thirty-five percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We have an increasing number of ESL students, primarily Spanish speaking, and an increasing number of homeless children. For most of my students, the music instruction that they receive in their weekly music class is all they have access to.

My Project

High and low pitches are especially difficult concepts for young children to grasp, as well as ascending and descending pitches. If I could connect the visual representation of pitches using the step bells, with the auditory experience of hearing the pitches that are higher and lower, it would be a powerful connection for my students. I already have some very old, rusty step bells, and 3 sets of new step bells from a previous DonorsChoose grant. I would love to be able to replace the old ones, with loose nails and rusty bars, with beautiful new bells for my students. Our class sizes will be increasing this year, so in order to give every child an instrument to share with a partner, I need to increase the actual number of bells we have in the music room.

Since for many of my students, their only exposure to quality musical instruments is in their weekly general music class, I would love for those instruments to be beautiful in sound quality and appearance.

Having new step bells to use in teaching the difficult concepts of high and low, ascending and descending pitches, will solidify that knowledge for these children. Thank you so much, in advance, for your support of this project!
