In 5th grade and our gardening club, we are working to get the students outside more to go through lessons and to get fresh air. It has been proven that getting outdoors helps students improve their mindset and capability of learning. They have been learning to work with others and understand how we all work and think about a task differently.
I have noticed that many of our students have difficulty explaining their feelings or discussing issues that arise in friendships and outdoor activities can and have helped with emotional regulation while engaging the senses.
They are looking for new ways to express themselves all of the time. I would like to give them the opportunity to have time to think about these issues and discover news ways to communicate and go past themselves to share positive messages with the rest of our school.
To complete our work outside, I would like to purchase clipboards to give children the opportunity to reflect on their experiences as we learn about each other and ourselves. We need more gardening supplies to give the students an opportunity to work with their hands. We will plant "seeds of kindness" to share with others. We will draw with chalk to work out solutions to problems on our large (mostly unused) amphitheater area and leave positive messages for others to see. I would like to also have them paint rocks to share words, messages, and pictures for motivation and kindness.
By engaging the senses and having more hands on learning, the students will be able to share what they learn about each other and share positivity and compassion throughout our school. I look forward to seeing the impact they make when they hear others comments about what they have presented.
