Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a high-needs, culturally, and ethnically diverse school where approximately 30% of students are learning English. We are located in the historic Central community of South L.A. In addition, all the students qualify for free-school lunch and other social/community services. In fact, our school is a direct hub for family resources that are crucial for sustainability and healthy development. For example, our school has a monthly food-bank, mental health services, and clothing giveaways to families and community members. Our school is a pillar of community that strives to provide exceptional services to students and families.
The inequity of resources to our students and families widened during the Covid-19 pandemic has clearly widened the educational gap.
Unfortunately, some groups of students have been affected more than others such as students with special need and students who are learning English. Therefore, our school adopted an "all hands on deck" approach to the implementation of literacy across all content areas. As a result, it is imperative that I use tools (ex. projector with screen) because it will enable me to enhance the educational experience of the our students by using various teaching strategies, and it will expose them to content in different modalities. I can provide visual aids to accompany verbal points, and I can also add images and videos, helping to further clarify new or unfamiliar concepts across disciplines to all student sub-groups.
Every lesson matters to our students, and the more engaging and purposeful they are, the likelihood of fast-track learning will occur. This will inspire confidence within them so they can be our future leaders.
Our school-community is committed to providing academic support to all students.
