Help me give my students a sports equipment cart so they can practice coping skills, like sports and games, which will drastically help improve their physical and mental health
I am a clinician in a special education program at an inner-city high school called STEP. It stands for the Structured Therapeutic Education Program and it is a specialized program for students with social-emotional and behavioral needs. We believe in maintaining physical and mental health as they go hand and hand together- our physical health affects our mental health and our mental health affects our physical health. When teaching our kiddos coping skills and healthy lifestyle choices, exercise and sports are something we like to practice at school.
Instead of being on their phones or video games, our hope is to plant the seeds of joy sports/games can bring our students.
STEP would love to have their own sport equipment cart to access when needed throughout the day. Our students love to go in the gym or outside during clinical group time, as incentives/rewards, and for coping skills. For example, sometimes we can incentive a student by saying, "if you can complete your math assignment, then we can go shoot hoops". Many of our student's struggle with trauma and other mental illnesses, like ADHD or Autism, and they highly benefit from physical activity and it is needed during the day.
I know our students would take good care of a cart and some would even love to be the one pushing it where we go! Thank you for taking the time to read this!
