Step One- Learn to Read

My Students

The Kindergarten students in our school are a very diverse group of hard-working students. They come from a very disadvantaged neighborhood; we have about ninety-nine percent of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

While they may not have all the materials they need, they have a faculty that supports them and a close-knit community that loves them.

We all band together to ensure their education encompasses both academics and citizenship.

My Project

One of the first steps in becoming a reader is learning all of the letters and letter sounds. This is a main emphasis in Kindergarten curriculum. As an interventionist in my school, one of my activities when working with students in Kindergarten is to review their letters and help them learn the ones they struggle with.

In order to engage all areas of the brain to assist in learning I use hands on activities.

The playdough, wiki sticks, and letter boards will help me to review and practice the letters of the alphabet while keeping lessons fun and connecting all areas of the brain.
