My Students
As a teacher and the K-5 Science Content Leader in a Title I elementary school, I often times notice that our students are not exposed to science outside of the classroom. Over 70% of our campus is on free/reduced-price lunch, and often times we have students who are not capable of even having their parents supply their own school supplies.
Our school is located in an area that was hit and affected by Hurricane Harvey, but our students are actively coming to school eager to learn.
In my classroom I work hard to ensure a safe, secure and comfortable environment for learning and seek ways to make learning innovative. We have created a culture on our campus where our students actually look forward to the bus pulling up at their houses in the morning to bring them to school.
These kids will take advantage of any learning opportunity that is brought their way. Our motto at our campus is reach for the stars, and our students do their best to reach beyond them.
My Project
Hands-on learning is one of the best ways to teach life science. In Texas, one of our learning standards is to describe how the flow of energy derived from the Sun, used by producers to create their own food, is transferred through a food chain and food web to consumers and decomposers.
To do this, we want to use owl pellets to teach the flow of energy.
One of the greatest advantages of using owl pellets to teach this concept is that students will actually get to see real life bones of animals and imprints of plants.
As a TRC teacher and a WeTeach_CS teacher affected by Harvey, I strive each and every day to find new innovative ways to engage my students in STEAM. Each student will have an opportunity to dissect an owl pellet and engage in hands-on learning.
