STEM With the Arts Is STEAM: Connecting With Music Technology

My Project

My students create a family at our school. We are a performing arts family (bands, choirs, strings, theatre, and dance) that support each other on the stage, in the classroom, and beyond. We are a high school servicing a multicultural population of students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. We strongly believe that the arts can instill positive change, transform, inspire, and change lives. The music program is a powerful unifier in our school. We are going to build this program over a strong foundation and proud history and generations of art students.

This project is for four monitors for our mac mini music production workstations.

Our music technology lab is a great application for our work in STEM, or STEAM as we prefer it. These classes are an excellent way to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by integrating creative arts with technical skills, making abstract concepts more engaging and applicable.

Our lessons often involve hands-on projects that mirror real-world STEM applications in the music industry, such as audio engineering, digital signal processing, and software development.

Students work as audio engineers manipulating waveforms and frequency. They engage in digital signal processing with EQ, reverb, and compression. They work in software development, working with plugins, and building code in Ableton, Logic.

These examples not only build technical proficiency but also encourage creativity, making STEM more accessible and exciting for students who might otherwise find it intimidating.
