My students need STEM tools that will allow them to investigate math, engineering, and science in a hands-on manner to encourage interest and participation.
The school in which I work with serves a low-income population, in which more than half of the students are from low-income households. The school only serves Kindergarten through 2nd grade, but the amount of trauma that a lot of the students has already endured appears in the form of disruptive behaviors, attention seeking behaviors, and struggle to self-regulate.
I work with students in Special Education, teaching 8 classes most days; all having diverse disabilities that include ADHD, Autism, and Learning Disabled, Intellectually Disabled, and emotional disturbance.
For most of my students, literacy skills and practice can be anxiety provoking. Unexpected behaviors or focus conditions could resist the students' learning.
These STEM tools and games, allow for students to explore math, science, and engineering skills in a hands-on, real-life manner. These activities are especially helpful to encourage independent learning and problem solving skills. In addition, simple activities and games, such as Lincoln Logs and Bug building, can help spark interest and passion that leads to a career in Science or Engineering.
These tools are not only great to teach individual learning and problem solving skills, but can be used to help teach students to plan and work together, which is a life long skill that all students will need.
These activities can also help to improve fine motor skills in students that are struggling. Not only can these be learning tools, but they can also be used for scheduled break or reward for students that need support with their emotional regulation throughout the school day.
