Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have special needs ranging from speech and language to autism. They enjoy learning with technology. I am starting to integrate more technology into my curriculum to engage my students in more depth. The majority of my students are also English language learners and come from low socio-economic families.
Our school has a large magnet robotics program, however, my students do not qualify for this program due to their special needs.
My method of teaching is project based and I work on exposing my students to a multitude of experiences such as gardening, robotics, and coding to help make learning math and science more meaningful.
My Project
This project will provide me with online professional development in computer science training and a stipend so I can better serve my students and use technology as an effective and authentic instructional tool in my classroom. I need to study computer science at a greater depth because I will be on a project associated with Yerkes Observatory creating a program to bring visually impaired and blind students into the field of astronomy where they are greatly underrepresented. I will be assigned tasks that the programmers write for my visually impaired students to complete. This will involve coding at a higher level than what I am currently comfortable with. I will also be using 3D printing to create tactile results from the tasks such as scaled down planets. The stipend that I will receive will offset some of the cost of acquiring an additional 3D printer for the students to use.
The computer science class that I wish to take is an online program that I can access during the summer months.
I will be able to give this class my undivided attention and not have to take away time from my students.
Currently, I teach my students coding and robotics in my classroom and they love it. My students want to learn more about these subjects since this is the wave of the future. Thanks for coordinating, CSTA!
