We have a total of 665 students in grades K-4. The student population consists of 51% Caucasian American, 42% African-American, and 7% Other. 37% of the student body has been identified as a having a learning disability. We are currently transitioning into a STEM magnet school to prepare students with 21st century skills. We use Project Lead The Way curriculum and currently collaborate to develop curriculum that will inspire students to evolve into creative critical thinkers.
My third graders are full of energy and very inquisitive.
I want them to have every opportunity available to succeed in school and their future. The jobs of the future are surrounded in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). With STEM and Project Based Learning (PBL), students are engaged, and solving the problems that today's scientists and engineers are also working to solve. The lessons are rich in inquiry, and the students have to use higher order thinking skills, and collaborate with their classmates on projects. The students are learning teamwork, collaboration, how to solve complex problems, and learning 21st century technology skills. These skills will be needed as the students further their education, or when they join the work force.
My Project
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -Benjamin Franklin
Chromebooks would impact every subject area while simultaneously stimulating students and sparking their interest in learning, therefore giving them ownership in their education.
I chose these pieces of technology because they are easy to use. Chromebooks also work great with students because everything can be automatically saved in the Cloud. This eliminates loss of work. I would like to offer the students in my classroom the same technology exposure as others in their district and state. In our district there is little availability to technology due to funding. I want to give my students the exposure to technology they deserve to become successful.
One way I plan to use these devices in my classroom as part of a task rotation model. Task rotations are a component of the blended learning model, which encourages collaboration and small group learning. I believe students who work well in collaborative groups will be more successful in life. Having Chromebooks will provide students with personalized, blended learning using Project Based Learning units. Social studies would be impacted greatly with the opportunity to attend virtual field trips all around the world! Math facts and strategies could be practiced on a daily basis, effectively. Students would also have the opportunity to quench the thirst for knowledge by discovering information in a self-sufficient manner.
Many of my students have never traveled outside of South Carolina. With Chromebooks, my students can discover the world at their fingertips! These Chromebooks will be the path to enhance their learning by keeping them engaged in lessons through hands-on, student-centered learning.
