My students need materials such as blocks, magnetic building sets, pencil boxes, and connector sets to include in our new STEM Bins so they can explore the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and math.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful hands on learning experiences in our science classroom.
STEAM bins are a creative and developmentally appropriate form of engineering for middle school students.
Middle School is the perfect time to introduce the engineering design process through simple STEAM activities because it builds on student’s natural curiosities to create. I want to provide an invitation for children to explore and engineer through play.
My Project
STEM bins are a wonderful way to encourage learning opportunities that include science, technology, engineering and math. All students should have a chance to try STEM challenges and Science Experiments.

My Science classes do not currently have any materials available to create these STEM bins, so funding of this project will be a great opportunity to get my students started. The materials I requested are needed to fill the bins so students can build, stack, write and draw. Students will use the materials to create a structure such as a bridge, maze or animal habitat. Math will be incorporated creating various shapes such as cones, triangular prisms and cubes.
STEM Bins are plastic boxes filled with an engineering manipulative such as magnetic blocks, plastic connectors, aluminum foil and tape. The boxes also contain sets of task cards that picture a variety of basic real world structures to inspire students to build.
Students will be given the opportunity to make improvements to their structures, talk about problem solving, draw blueprints or combine building materials.
