With your donation, my Language Arts cohort and I were able to run a cross curricular project, tying in concepts from Science, Social Studies, and Reading. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind perfectly tied concepts from our previous Science unit, where students explained how turbines work. In our previous unit, students reasoned how to make a turbine run more efficiently by adjusting the mass of the machine and the force applied to it. This background knowledge helped them realize the amazing feats Kamkwamba accomplished by teaching himself concepts in physics and actually building a turbine himself.\r\nWe were also able to connect our knowledge to Kamkwamba's home in Africa, with background knowledge of the geography of Africa. My cohort strengthened students' skills in reading comprehension with nonfiction text, and supporting claims with text evidence. I believe students who most enjoyed this unit were those particularly interested in Science. One of my students noted he really enjoyed reading about Kamkwamba's story because his intelligence was inspirational. We plan on making this a larger project in the future. I am so grateful for the opportunity to challenge students, and your support has made that easier.","fullyFundedDate":1732712201915,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-young-inventors/8971254/","projectTitle":"Empowering Young Inventors","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fitz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9848956_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732655932987","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9848956"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25463","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":317,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":72,"percentWhite":11,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.4,"schoolId":25463,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Harold B Dawson Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Harold B Dawson Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/peoria-public-school-district-150/calvin-coolidge-middle-school/25463"}
