My students live in a very rural area of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are a high poverty school district with one hundred percent of the students eligible for free breakfast and lunch. My students are athletes, artists, builders, scientists, mathematicians, readers, writers, and more. I want to continue to drive my students to be all they have ever dreamed of, and more!
My students deserve the opportunity to continue to grow as readers over the summer, so that when they return in the fall they are reading on or even above grade level.
With this project I will be able to encourage students and parents to read at home by providing positive reading experiences to families throughout the summer.
My Project
My students need read loud books like Iggy Peck, I Wanna New Room and many others that will encourage them to continue reading and exploring through STEM activities all summer long. hope is that creating positive reading experiences will encourage our students and parents to read more often at home. Research shows that students from low income families lose at least two months of reading achievement during the summer. This is known as the summer slide. This is mostly due to the lack of access to books. I plan to provide students with the opportunity twice a week to participate in our free book fair. In coordination with this, I plan to provide a read-aloud experience for students and parents in conjunction with a STEM related activity. The materials funded through this grant will provide the read aloud books shared with the students/parents. Community support, through local book drives, will provide books for young and old readers who choose to take a book home with them.
