My school community is small town Americana... perhaps more diverse than what immediately comes to mind, and unfortunately, not as economically robust as we would like. The students are a wonderful collection of individual personalities that never cease to keep me on my toes or amused with their random comments.
I want to immerse students in a fascinating hands-on interactive opportunity to develop basic robotics and programming skills.
Our school has not previously offered robotics courses or a rigorous programming curriculum, and I want to extend the STEM educational possibilities for our children.
Our 6th through 8th-grade classes are a diverse mix of skill levels, intellectual abilities, family composition, and economic levels, but never lacking in enthusiasm or spirit. I am excited about the possibilities of unleashing these young minds to pursue creative solutions!
My Project
It's time to get the ball rolling on some robotics at Lake Butler Middle School and we need your help to get things going... literally. With some Sphero Bolt programmable robotic spheres, we'll be introducing students in multiple grades to coding.
If a Sphero Bolt rolling around the room flashing messages as it travels a predetermined path doesn't make a STEM experience fun, nothing will!
Coding will be a new experience at Lake Butler Middle School, and whether it's block-based or text-based, students must be engaged in order for the learning to be effectively assimilated.
We're working to secure the necessary materials to inaugurate our program. These units provide challenging opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills on multiple levels to engage 6th grade students with simple tasks while also presenting more complex and robust problems to students in higher grades.
