My students need a clean, organized classroom. A tidy room will make the classroom feel and look more professional. I would love to replace my old and worn cardboard boxes with clear matching ones.
I teach Biology and Chemistry in a rural area in Upper Michigan. We are a high poverty school district with 100% of the students eligible for free breakfast and lunch. While our district recently passed a millage rate to update the technology in our buildings; we are currently on a zero spending freeze to help us balance our budget.
Because of the financial crisis in our school and the poverty faced by so many in our community, our students often feel like the are 'less' worthy than students in surrounding schools.
The truth is, there is no where else that I would want to teach because my students value their education. They truly appreciate the hard work and extra hours I put into teaching and, in turn, are willing to challenge themselves to learn the subjects I am most passionate about. Though there are days that are beyond challenging, my students continually bring a smile to my face and make me feel like I am truly making a difference in their lives.
My Project
Science classrooms require a seemingly endless supply of materials. I make many of my materials on my own time and use them year after year. When I moved into my classroom twenty years ago, there were dozens of cardboard boxes holding lab supplies. Since that time, I have added even more manipulatives to my class and am running out of space to store things. As the variety of courses I teach has grown over the years (from Biology and Advanced Biology to Anatomy, Chemistry, and now Advanced Chemistry), I have finally decided that I must do something to clean up the clutter.
These storage bins will allow me to replace the worn out boxes currrently scattered throughout my room and present a fresh, organized, and safer learning environment for my students.
The areas in my room where supplies are housed look old, tired, dusty, and uncared for. I would be so grateful to be able to tidy up my room and present a fresh, clean space next fall. Thank you for considering funding my STEM spring cleaning project!
