Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our deaf education classroom consists of 7 students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Some of the students live in our local town, while others travel over an hour to attend our program. Deaf education programs are few and far in between, especially programs like ours that try to meet the individual needs of each and every one of our students. Our students are mainstreamed based upon their IEPs. Mainstreaming, for us, means the students are in class with hearing students and receive instruction with a regular education teacher and a sign language interpreter. Some students are mainstreamed for part of the day, while others are out for most or all of the day.
Our goal is to make our deaf/hard of hearing students as independent as possible in a hearing world.
We teach a fun-loving group of kids who work at their best at all times. We are with them from the time they are very young until they go to middle school. Seeing their progress makes teaching all worth it!
My Project
We are always looking for opportunities for our students to meet deaf role models and experience hands-on activities that bring things to life. This year we have been incorporating a STEM activity into our lessons weekly. The STEM activities are related to the seasons or topics we are discussing in our curriculum. The students love the hands-on experience to their education and help to make learning fun!
This year we have the opportunity to have a deaf engineer come to our classroom.
He is going to teach us about his life growing up, his experiences as a deaf person, his college experience, and the day to day responsibilities to his job. One of the topics will be basic physics concepts of gears, wheel/pulley systems, and axles/wheels.
When he comes to visit, it will help our visual deaf learners to use the STEM and get a better understanding of his job. They will get a hands-on opportunity to "experience" his job and become engineers. It will open up a potential job opportunity for them in the future and give them a "taste" of future science lessons.
