My Students
Learning about technology and its many applications to the field of Robotics can offer pathways to success to students of any socioeconomic level. It is especially critical in the education of at-risk students.
The students at CHS are of diverse ethnicity, but tend to share similar difficulties in life.
Most are behind on credits, many have not been successful in traditional programs, and approximately 74% of them live below the poverty line. Their education here involves learning social skills, gaining competency in reading, writing, science, and math, and learning skills that will make them viable candidates for college or the job market. This is an especially difficult challenge, as we have little parental support and have to fund raise our budgets for any activities, including Robotics.
My Project
The Robotics team is a chance for students at our alternative school to become familiar with various forms of technology, as well as interact with and compete against traditional high schools. Unfortunately, this task requires many forms of expensive technology. One of the requirements of the First Robotics group is that students create a website and document their growth process as they learn and build their robot. In order to do this, we need a digital camera that can capture what we do and easily upload the images to our website. The camera would also be an opportunity for students to record the robotics competitions and share them with other school mates and the community, opening eyes to the potential of our students at CHS.
This is crucial, because the Robotics project offers students who are at a distinct disadvantage in life a chance at future success that they may have otherwise been denied.
This camera will do more than record their journey through First Robotics; it will help our students bring a bright career into focus.
