STEM Project for the Arts

My students need binder clips, clothes pins and wooden craft sticks to create different structures to build STEM knowledge.

This project expired on March 21, 2017.

My Students

My students attend an arts high school where they complete their academic classes in the morning and arts classes in their major in the afternoon. Majors include: theater design and production, visual arts, dance, music, theater, musical theater and creative writing. Students attend the school from more than 60 districts in the state (mostly the county) and will sometimes travel up to an hour each way on a bus.

My students enjoy learning and want to learn both academics in the morning and arts in the afternoon.

I strive to pull in as much as I can from their arts curriculum while also teaching algebra 1, geometry and algebra 2. To have arts integrated in the mathematics classroom through STEM projects, students truly strive and find their true potential.

My Project

These materials may seem random but when put together they are the beginning of a STEM project. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In an arts school it may be difficult to get students to be interested in math and science, but through hands on learning projects get my students wanting to learn and participate - but even more, wanting to work.

Students will be able to view binder clips, clothespins and Popsicle sticks as ordinary objects that can be used in extraordinary ways and guide them toward wanting to learn more about STEM - and STEAM, and teamwork.

I will be able to give students at least five different challenges where they must work in groups the first time they work with one another on STEM projects, but then the group challenges will get harder. Students will learn more about problem solving and team work than they would be able to on a project or worksheet and take the skills that the learn into other areas of their life.

With working at a school based in the arts, it must be remembered that the majority of the population is female. I find it important to complete STEM projects in class because females are underrepresented, but also to be able to work with students who are different genders, ethnicity, religions and more. My students will benefit from having this materials within reach to further their learning.
