STEM-Powered Writing with Robots

Help me give my students the Dash and Dot robot package that includes the xylophone and ball launcher accessories and the coding challenge cards for the Dash and Dot robots.

My Students

Our school recently opened less than 5 years ago in one of the northern suburbs of Houston, TX. Our school integrates fine arts throughout the curriculum. All of our students have the opportunity to demonstrate creativity and innovation as well as critical thinking and problem-solving through art, music, dance theater, and creative writing. This school year, our school library is transforming into a learning commons with a makerspace area in order to expose all of our students to hands-on STEM activities centered around science, technology, engineering, and math.

My Project

With Dash and Dot robots and coding cards, students will learn the fundamentals of coding through fun robotic challenges. For example, one challenge card is titled, "Dog Trainer." In this challenge, it states, "The robot Dash is acting like a puppy, and you are the trainer. Train Dash to turn in a circle."

Once students have learned the basics of coding with the challenge cards, they will write a story about a robot adventure and make it come to life by coding Dash.

The Dash and Dot even come with a ball launcher students can use in part of their story. They can also have the Dash robot's xylophone to create music to accompany their story. Younger students could begin small by just writing 1-2 sentences such as "The robot threw the ball. The ball hit the table." Then they would code the robot to launch the ball and try to position the robot to where the ball would land on the table.

I have used Dash and Dot robots at my previous school, but just moved schools this school year! The students at my new school have never used Dash and Dot before. I know they will love learning coding with Dash and Dot, and I cannot wait to see their robotic adventure stories come to life!
